NYC's Slowest Bus Lines 2004

Pokey the Snail

The Straphangers Campaign today handed out the [2004 "Pokey Awards"](http://www.straphangers.org/pokeyaward/release04.html) for NYC's slowest buses! And the winners for each borough are...Drum roll please!

* In Staten Island: the S60, at a brisk 7.6 mph!
* In Queens: the Q24 / Q32, at a whopping 6.9 mph!
* In Brooklyn: my personal favorite the B63, clocked in at a ponderous 5.4 mph
* In the Bronx: the Bx13, squeezed out Brooklyn by coming in at 5.2 mph

and finally the slowest bus in all of NYC is:

* Manhattan: the M34, at a pace that most healthy NYers could easily outpace -- 4.0 mph

Boy, kudos to the [MTA](http://mta.info) for the improved service!

B63 & Sunset Park

I drove through Sunset Park a few weeks ago - and the only people I can blame are the people of 5th Avenue, between 40th and 55th Streets. The stores are jammed with people, there is double parking on both side (with hazards flashing of course) and pedestrians crossing at every point in the road. It took *ME* 20 minutes to break through the chaos and *I* was in a car. That may be part of it. I do not defent the MTA though, the fare hike has not been noticed by this straphanger. It seems that September has been one of the worst months ever for commuters. New York is a rainy town, why can't the Subway handle it? I should never have a 2 1/2 hour commute each way. Get some new pumps with the extra 50 cents your jacking every New Yorker for!
